The Bisons visit the Tennessee Lady Vols. Here is our women’s basketball Volunteers preview.

After more than a week off during Christmas, the Tennessee Lady Vols return to the court Monday for the first time since Sunday, Dec. 20. This will be the final outing for Kellie Harper’s team before they begin SEC play.

UT will host the Lipscomb Bisons Monday night, who head into the game with a 3-2 record. Like Rocky Top, their last matchup was on Sunday, Dec. 20. It was an 84-64 loss to the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders.

With a 5-1 record, the Tennessee Lady Vols beat the UNC Greensboro Spartans 66-40 in their most recent outing, which was their third straight win on the year. Here is all the information you need for Monday night’s matchup.

Just like UT, Lipscomb is led by a former Pat Summitt player. Lauren (Avant) Sumski, who played for Rocky Top in 2010-2011 before finishing her career at Rhodes College in Memphis, is in her second year as head coach of the Bisons. Ariel Massengale, who played for the Lady Vols from to 2011 to 2015, is a Sumski assistant.

Sumski’s team returns three of five starters from last year’s team that went 7-23 overall and 4-12 in Atlantic Sun Play, but all five players who started at the beginning of the year are back. Dorie Harrison and Sydney Shelton both suffered season-ending injuries early on last year. Their return has made a positive impact, particularly Shelton, who is averaging 10.4 points per game.

In fact, all four players who averaged double figures last year are back. Harrion averaged over 10 points last year before her injury, and Jalyn Holcomb and Taylor Clark, last year’s two leading scorers, are both back. Clark is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 13.8 points per game.

Simply put, this team is more experienced and much deeper now, so they already look much better and could be tough for the Tennessee Lady Vols to handle. Harper’s team can’t take them lightly. After this game, they will begin SEC play Thursday, New Year’s Eve, at the Texas A&M Aggies.
