Tennessee basketball at Vanderbilt postponed
The Tennessee basketball Volunteers at the Vandy Commodores has been called off due to coronavirus issues.
It seems as if Tennessee basketball can’t stop having its schedule changed this week due to COVID-19 issues with other programs. An added game due to a reschedule this week has now been postponed as well.
UT’s visit to the Vanderbilt Commodores Tuesday night has been postponed due to COVID-related issues within the Vandy program, according to a release from the SEC. Their next matchup will be Saturday at home against Vanderbilt, if that’s still on.
This game was added in last-minute due to COVID outbreaks that forced Tennessee basketball’s visit to the South Carolina Gamecocks and Vandy’s matchup against the Missouri Tigers to be postponed this week. Mizzou and USC were both hit with COVID issues, so it made sense for the Vols and Commodores to have a home and home.
However, the issues that hit Vanderbilt’s program now leave Saturday’s game in jeopardy as well, and there’s a chance a few more schedule changes take place. Right now, we’ll just have to wait and see how everything goes.
Vanderbilt would have come into this game with a 4-5 record and 0-3 SEC record, coming off a close loss to the Mississippi State Bulldogs, under second-year head coach Jerry Stackhouse. Rick Barnes’ team would have come in at 9-1 overall, 3-1 in the SEC and ranked No. 10 in both polls after beating the Arkansas Razorbacks and Texas A&M Aggies last week.
Obviously, COVID-related cancelations have been a big part of this season for the Vols. UT had to cancel its first four games due to an outbreak within its own program, including matchups with the Gonzaga Bulldogs and at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
To make up for those cancelations, Rocky Top added the Colorado Buffaloes, UT Martin Skyhawks and Saint Joseph’s Hawks while moving around other games, but a COVID issue involving the UT Martin program resulted in that game being canceled. If they don’t take the court Saturday, Tennessee basketball will next play on Tuesday, Jan. 19 when they visit the Florida Gators.
