The Montgomery, Ala. defensive back has the Tennessee football Volunteers in his top three.

Plenty of prospects are still out there as Tennessee football inches closer to finalizing its 2021 recruiting class, and the Vols are now in the running for another rising prospect. This time, they are targeting a secondary player from Alabama.

Juwon Gaston, a three-star across the board who is listed as a safety on 247Sports and a cornerback on Rivals, named Rocky Top in his top three. Coming out of Carver High School in Montgomery, Ala., Gaston stands at 5’11” and somewhere between 185 and 190 pounds.

In addition to Tennessee football, the South Carolina Gamecocks and South Alabama Jaguars were also included Gaston’s top three. He announced all of the schools Wednesday evening with a graphic on Twitter.

According to Ryan Callahan of GoVols247, the Vols became the first Power Five program to offer Gaston a scholarship back on Dec. 7. South Carolina offered him one just two days later, which also happened to be two days after they introduced Shane Beamer as their new head coach.

UT is no stranger to Carver High players in Montgomery. Freshman offensive lineman James Robinson, a three-star in the Vols’ 2020 class, also went there and was one of Gaston’s teammates. It will be interesting to see if that plays any role in Gaston choosing Rocky Top.

Currently, three-star De’Shawn Rucker is the only defensive back in the Vols’ 2021 recruiting class, although three-star athlete Christian Charles and four-star athlete Kaemen Marley could also play that role. Still, Jeremy Pruitt needs to beef up the depth at that position and could certainly use more talent there.

There are no predictions to land Gaston on the Rivals Future Cast. However, South Carolina is the unanimous favorite to land him on the Rivals Fan Future Cast and is named the favorite by the lone 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction. As a result, Tennessee football may have a bit of an uphill climb, but it does have some advantages.
