Record with UCF Knights: 19-7

  • 1 AAC Championship (2017)
  • 1 New Year’s Six Bowl (2017-18 Peach Bowl)
  • 2 bowl appearances (1-1 in games)

We discussed the job Josh Heupel did following Scott Frost. However, the hire of Frost alone was an amazing move by Danny White, and it serves as a model for what the Tennessee Vols hope to get out of him, as he immediately takes over amidst the need to hire a new football coach.

In 2015, UCF went 0-12. That was George O’Leary’s last year on the job, ending an 11-year career, and he resigned amidst an 0-8 start. At the time, O’Leary was the interim athletic director, as he had replaced Todd Stansbury, who left for the Oregon State Beavers.

Anyway, White was hired in 2017. His first move was to find a new head coach of the football program, and he turned to Frost. From 2013 to 2015, Frost had served as offensive coordinator of the Oregon Ducks and helped Marcus Mariota win the Heisman in 2014, but a drop-off by the program under Mark Helfrich in 2015 made him a questionable hire.

Those questions were answered immediately. Frost went from 0-12 to 6-7 in a year. Then came the 2017 season, and he took the Knights to a 13-0 record and win over the Auburn Tigers, which led to them claiming the national championship since they never had a shot at the College Football Playoff. Frost resurrected UCF. White hired him.
