In the midst of a two-game losing streak, Tennessee basketball returns to the court Tuesday night looking to right the ship. Staying at home, they’ll face an inconsistent but dangerous team that can beat anybody on any given night.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs travel to Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn. to take on the Vols Tuesday night. Just like UT, MSU is on a two-game losing streak, losing by 18 to the Ole Miss Rebels and by eight to the Alabama Crimson Tide last week.

On the other hand, Rocky Top lost by 26 to the Florida Gators last week and then by nine to the Missouri Tigers, dropping to No. 18 in the AP Poll and No. 17 in the Coaches Poll. Here is all the information you need for Tennessee basketball’s Tuesday night matchup.

Part of the Vols’ skid has been due to injuries at guard. Jaden Springer has misses the past two games, and Santiago Vescovi has been playing with a hip pointer. Those injuries limited the offensive production in the backcourt.

Led by seventh-year head coach Ben Howland, MSU is in a bit of a rebuilding season, as they only return two starters from last year’s team that went 20-11 and 11-7 in the SEC. However, they did beat both teams that beat UT last week, dominating Mizzou by 15 on Jan. 5 and holding off Florida by three on Jan. 16.

Simply put, this team is dangerous. A big reason is the emergence of D.J. Stewart Jr. one of the only two returning starter who is now the team’s leading scorer. Iverson Molinar has blossomed as a starter too, and the arrival of Tolu Smith, who redshirted last year after transferring from the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, has also helped.

After this game, Tennessee basketball will host the Kansas Jayhawks, who are No. 15 in the AP Poll and No. 18 in the Coaches Poll, in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. MSU will host the Iowa State Cyclones that same day.
