Tennessee football: 10 coaches Vols should avoid hiring
If one thing is certain in life, it’s that every name in the book will come up in a Tennessee football coaching search. There is somebody in Vol Nation right now who thinks Bill Belichick would leave the New England Patriots to take over UT. Hey, the guy was born in Nashville. Don’t fans on Rocky Top have a right to dream?
Okay, back to reality. There are some realistic names who have popped up in this coaching search that new athletic director Danny White should just forget about. For some of them, it’s due to a lack of a resume, and for others, there is simply too much baggage to carry.
As a result, we’re going to rank the 10 coaches Tennessee football should stay away from. Our top coach will be the one that they most need to avoid. There are plenty of reasons to avoid all these coaches, but avoiding some of them will kill fans’ dreams. It doesn’t matter. Reality needs to set in. These are the guys UT should absolutely not hire as head coach.
10. Bob Stoops
Okay, this one has just been a small rumor, which is why he’s so low on the list, but there has been plenty of talk about the Vols hiring Bob Stoops from some fans. It seems like Stoops’ name has come up in a coaching search the last three times UT has been in the market for one. More than Stoops being a good or bad hire, his biggest issue is just being a waste of time.
Look, he’s not heading to Rocky Top. He would never be interested in coaching in the SEC East against his brother, Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Stoops. That’s the first issue. The other one, though, is that his hands weren’t entirely clean with the Oklahoma Sooners.
Sorry, but there’s always been something suspicious about him retiring amidst the fallout of the Joe Mixon scandal. Given the sexual assault lawsuit against UT in 2016, which broke less than a year before Stoops “retired,” Tennessee football probably can’t afford to hire him anyway given the hot water it’s in.
