7. Adam Gase

There have been some rumors with Peyton Manning being involved in the coaching search that one of his former coaches could take over Tennessee football. Jim Caldwell may not be as bad a hire as people think, and David Cutcliffe would be an amazing hire if he were to actually leave the Duke Blue Devils, but that’s not going to happen.

However, another name popping up is Adam Gase. We have to say this up front: Gase would be a terrible hire. His lack of experience isn’t an issue, although he hasn’t coached in college since 2002. The problem is what he’s done with where he’s been at.

Gase’s only success is when he was Manning’s offensive coordinator in 2013 and 2014. Anybody could have run that ship. When he joined the Chicago Bears in 2015, he oversaw an offense that was No. 21 in total yards and No. 23 in scoring. If offense is his speciality, he hasn’t shown it.

Then, both of his head coaching stints were failures. He made one playoff appearance in 2016, and everybody figured him out after that. His inability to adjust was evident, and Ryan Tannehill playing so much better after leaving him was embarrassing. Gase has had four straight losing seasons with the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets. There’s a reason he was fired.
