6. Lane Kiffin

Yes, it would be a gutsy move to bring Lane Kiffin back, and Danny White has connections to the guy. His brother, Brian White, is athletic director for the Florida Atlantic Owls and spent two years there while Kiffin was still head coach. We all know Kiffin is an offensive genius, his teams are fun to watch, and he would certainly generate excitement coming from the Ole Miss Rebels.

It’s fair for fans to say nobody should overreact to his decision to leave Tennessee football after one year in 2009 for the USC Trojans. If he can win, who cares? Right? Just negotiate a better contract than what Mike Hamilton gave him.

Well, there are some issues with Kiffin beyond just his departure after a year. For starters, his brashness while he was on Rocky Top and his departure turned lots of powerful people at UT against him, and they would oppose the hire, so the move would keep the school divided.

Beyond such division, though, Kiffin has another major issue. The last time the program was under a serious investigation from the NCAA, it was due to transgressions committed during Kiffin’s one year there. His moves wrecked the university and gave Derek Dooley almost nothing to work with. With the Vols facing even greater issues now, that’s another reason for them to avoid him.
