Breakdown of players by home state

Georgia: 5 (6 with JuCo commit)

North Carolina and Tennessee: 3

Alabama: 2

Florida: 2 (1 attended JuCo elsewhere)

South Carolina: 2 (Both attended JuCo elsewhere)

Kansas: 1 (2 with JuCo commits)

Maryland, Texas and Virginia: 1

Mississippi: 0 (1 JuCo commit)

This is somewhat of a repeat of what Jeremy Pruitt did in 2019, when he relied heavily on the talent from Georgia. Following that was a very successful in-state run in 2020, which helped Tennessee football secure a top 10 class that year. This year, only three players are from the state, worse than even 2019, when five players were in-state.

We already broke down on the previous slide the differences between the home states of junior college players and the states they went to junior college in. If you combine it all, there are 11 total states that UT commits represent. There are 10 if you only count the location of the schools the players are coming from in 2021 or if you only count the state they are initially from.

Of the Vols’ 21 commitments, 14 came from either in-state or a neighboring state, and that number goes up to 16 if you count the players who went to junior college in Mississippi and Georgia. Josh Heupel will likely want to do a much better job of tightening the borders in the future based on his press conference, but it’s undeniable that Georgia produces some real talent.
