Tennessee Lady Vols postpone Mississippi State, Texas A&M again due to COVID
What was supposed to be a major test run for the Tennessee Lady Vols, facing three ranked teams on the road in a row, has now been interrupted. For the second time just this SEC season, Kellie Harper’s team has had to pause activities due to COVID.
According to a report from the SEC, the Rocky Top’s upcoming matchups at the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Thursday and at the Texas A&M Aggies on Sunday have both been postponed due to these activities. Their next scheduled matchup is at the Kentucky Wildcats on Thursday, Feb. 11.
Not only is this the second time the Tennessee Lady Vols have had to postpone to SEC games due to COVID this year, but it’s also the second time they have had to postpone a matchup with Texas A&M. Sunday was supposed to be a make-up game after the two teams’ initially scheduled matchup on Dec. 31 was postponed, also due to a COVID outbreak that affected UT.
Ranked No. 18 in the AP Poll and No. 19 in the Coaches Poll with a 12-3 record, an 6-1 SEC record and three wins over top 25 teams, Rocky Top will miss out on a huge opportunity due to this postponement. It will keep the mystery alive as to how good this team can be.
After all, Mississippi State, Texas A&M and Kentucky are all top 25 teams. MSU is ranked No. 24 in the AP Poll and No. 22 in the Coaches Poll. A&M is ranked No. 7 in both polls. Kentucky, whom UT beat 70-53 at home in their first matchup, is ranked No. 15 in the AP Poll and No. 14 in the Coaches Poll.
It will be hard to see how they can make up these games now, given the fact that one was a scheduled make-up game anyway and they have already played one make-up game this year, which was that Kentucky win. We’ll have to see what happens with the Tennessee Lady Vols going forward, but this is a blow to the current excitement of the program.
