Coming off a heartbreaking and somewhat embarrassing 52-50 road loss to the Ole Miss Rebels on Tuesday, Tennessee basketball takes the court Saturday in a nothing-to-lose but everything-to-gain matchup. This time, it’s against a dangerous rival as well.

At Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky., the Vols will attempt to beat the Kentucky Wildcats on the road in back to back years for the first time since 1976 and 1977, back during the Ray Mears, Bernard King and Ernie Grunfeld era. They beat UK 81-73 last year when they were unranked and John Calipari’s team was ranked in the top 10.

This year, Rick Barnes’ team is the one ranked, coming in at No. 11 in the AP Poll and No. 10 in the Coaches Poll. Kentucky, meanwhile, is struggling severely this season and is in the midst of a two-game losing streak, falling to the Alabama Crimson Tide and Missouri Tigers. Here is all the information you need for Tennessee basketball’s matchup.

Saturday, Feb. 6. 8 p.m. ET. 12-4 (5-4). 534. ESPN. 5-11 (4-5). 528. Tennessee -3.5

Obviously, Kentucky dramatically underachieving has been a major story this year. Sure, they lost four starters to the NBA from last year, but that’s typical for Calipari’s program, and they added another No. 1 recruiting class in 2020, highlighted by this year’s leading scorer Brandon Boston.

However, the team just hasn’t gelled the same this year. Boston is the only freshman averaging double figures. It’s possible that all the COVID-related issues kept the freshmen from being able to develop the way they usually do under Calipari. It’s insanely rare, though, for UT to be a favorite against Kentucky on the road.

If Tennessee basketball wins, Barnes will become the first head coach since Don DeVoe to beat Kentucky at least once in six straight seasons. He is already the first to do it since DeVoe in five straight seasons, and those two join Ray Mears as the only three to do it. DeVoe, however, did it for seven straight seasons from 1978-79 to 1984-85.
