Tennessee basketball to replace Florida with Georgia Wednesday
It looks like Tennessee basketball won’t be able to get revenge on the Florida Gators this week. Another schedule change is affecting the Vols due to a COVID outbreak among another school in the conference.
According to SECSports, UT’s scheduled Wednesday home game against Florida has been postponed due to a COVID outbreak within UF. The Georgia Bulldogs’ scheduled matchup at the Texas A&M Aggies that same day was also postponed due to a COIVD outbreak among A&M.
As a result, Tennessee basketball will now host the UGA Dawgs at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn. that night. This game, which will be televised at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2, was initially scheduled for Wednesday, March 3, the last regular season game of the year for Rocky Top.
Rick Barnes’ program will play this game after a solid win at the Kentucky Wildcats this past Saturday. However, at 13-4 overall and just 6-4 in the SEC, it is still struggling with inconsistency, as this team did lose 52-50 to the Ole Miss Rebels on the road earlier last week.
Led by third-year head coach Tom Crean, Georgia will come into the game on a three-game winning streak with a 12-6 overall record and a 5-6 SEC record. Given the inconsistencies of the Vols, this could definitely be a dangerous team for them.
A make-up date for the Vols and Florida hasn’t yet been announced, but UT does have multiple options. That March 3 date is obviously now open, and they could also play on Feb. 22 or Feb. 23, as they have an open midweek during that time too.
Throughout the year, Tennessee basketball has been no stranger to COVID-related postponements. The Vols had to postpone their first four games of the year, including a marquee matchup with the Gonzaga Bulldogs, due to a COVID outbreak that hit their own program. Since then, they have had various postponements due to other programs being affected.
In fact, this news broke as an outbreak related to the Tennessee Lady Vols forced them to postpone last Thursday’s matchup at the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Sunday’s matchup at A&M. It’s the second COVID outbreak to affect Kellie Harper’s program in SEC play.
