6. Offensive line: C

Number of signees: 4

Numbers are perfect. Quality is not. Tennessee football took a major hit on the offensive line in the offseason. Trey Smith is entering the NFL Draft after graduating and playing on Rocky Top for four years. Three other scholarship offensive linemen have transferred.

One of those transfers, Wanya Morris, was a rising superstar, and he has joined the Oklahoma Sooners. Jahmir Johnson, a veteran who brought versatility, has joined the Texas A&M Aggies. Jarious Abercrombie, a walk-on initially who developed and improved enough to earn a scholarship, has joined the Illinois State Redbirds.

How did the Vols respond? They secured commitments from four players, to be fair, in Jeremiah Crawford, J’Marion Gooch, William Griffin-Parker and Amari McNeil. Only Griffin-Parker, though, has a four-star rating across any service. He has it just on ESPN, not 247Sports or Rivals.

Crawford was a last-minute pickup by Heupel, the only signee he secured in this class, but he’s a junior college transfer. None of these guys offset the damage of Morris leaving. As a result, at least on paper, this class could have used more talent. At least the Vols were able to keep their depth in place.
