Tennessee football makes cut for in-state 2022 QB/ATH Destin Wade
For the second straight day, Tennessee football made the cut for an in-state 2022 prospect from the Nashville area. In this case, that prospect could potentially be their next quarterback, which is obviously a major storyline under Josh Heupel.
Destin Wade, who is listed as a dual-threat quarterback on 247Sports and ESPN but an athlete on Rivals, had the Vols in his top nine. Standing between 6’3″ and 6’4″ and weighing between 195 and 205 pounds, Wade is a four-star on Rivals and a three-star on 247Sports.
In addition to Tennessee football, Wade had the Ole Miss Rebels, Virginia Tech Hokies, Louisville Cardinals, Kentucky Wildcats, West Virginia Mountaineers, Virginia Cavaliers, Penn State Nittany Lions and Arizona State Sun Devils on his list. He announced the schools on Twitter.
Coming out of Summit High School in Spring Hill, Tenn., which is in Williamson and Maury Counties, just south of Nashville, Wade made his list the day after 2022 offensive lineman Jacob Hood revealed that the Vols made his top six. Like Wade, Hood is a four-star on Rivals and a three-star on 247Sports. He comes from Hillsboro High School in Nashville.
Although other quarterbacks, including in-state quarterbacks, are the storyline for the Vols, don’t underestimate Wade. Josh Heupel will likely want multiple guys on his roster next year, asHendon Hooker is in his last year and there will likely be at least one transfer, probably two, among Kaidon Salter, Harrison Bailey and Brian Maurer after this upcoming season.
As a result, Heupel needs all the help he can get. That includes trying to secure Wade, Ty Simpson and Kaden Martin, son of UT legend Tee Martin. There needs to be depth and open competition at the spot in the future.
Currently, there are no favorites to land Wade on the Rivals Future Cast or the 247Sports Crystal Ball. Tennessee football is the majority favorite on the Rivals Fan Future Cast, but that’s unscientific. As a result, the Vols do have some work to do to land him, but his skills and a guy with Heupel’s track record coaching quarterbacks is a good start.
