Quarterbacks. Volunteers . Joey Halzle. 3. player. 839.

New quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle hasn’t reached the coaching stature that Josh Heupel has earned, but if Heuepel is now coaching in the SEC, then he’s certainly on his way. Like Heupel, Halzle played under center at the University of Oklahoma from 2006-2008 then spent an additional two years with the Sooners as a Graduate Assistant.

The former OU signal-caller followed Heupel to Utah State University and the University of Missouri, serving as an offensive assistant for both the Aggies and the Tigers. In 2019, Halzle again joined one of Heupel’s coaching rooms as an offensive assistant with the UCF Knights before being promoted to QB coach in 2020.

With the young quarterbacks in Tennessee football’s program, Halzle will look to recreate the success he and Heupel drew from Dillon Gabriel. It’s that same young talent that makes Halzle a good fit for Rocky Top.

If Heupel is the wise veteran leader of UT’s quarterback room, then Halzle is the brotherly, relatable coach for Harrison Bailey and Kaidon Salter to grow next to. Again, this isn’t a front-page coaching hire by any means, but he’s an up-and-coming quarterback coach that should bode well with the current signal-callers in Knoxville.
