A change in coaches isn’t going to change where Tennessee football needs to focus its recruiting efforts, and Georgia remains one of those key places. Combine that with the need at running back, and the Vols received a bit of good news Tuesday that could become great news.

UT made the top five for 2022 Atlanta, Ga. running back Quintavious Lockett. Coming out of Douglass High School, Lockett is listed as a three-star on Rivals and 247Sports but a four-star on ESPN. He stands between 5’11” and 6’0″ and weights between 210 and 240 pounds.

In addition to Tennessee football, Lockett had the Georgia Bulldogs, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Alabama Crimson Tide and Maryland Terrapins on his list. He announced the schools with a video that he released on Twitter.

Obviously, with the transfers of Ty Chandler and Eric Gray this offseason and four-star signee Cody Brown being released from his letter of intent due to the coaching change, running back is a big position of need on Rocky Top going forward. Landing a guy like Lockett would go a long way towards helping with that.

Josh Heupel does have some talent at the position this year, including Jabari Small, Tee Hodge, Dee Beckwith, Len’Neth Whitehead, incoming freshman Jaylen Wright and incoming junior college transfer Tiyon Evans. However, Small is the only back with any significant experience at this level, so we have no way of knowing how the other players will turn out.

Given his size, Lockett would appear to be more of a power back, but Heupel’s offensive systems have thrived in the past with such backs. In fact, his units have fared better when he has had options on that front.

Currently, there are no favorites to land Lockett on the Rivals Future Cast or the 247Sports Crystal Ball. The Rivals Fan Future Cast had the Miami Hurricanes and South Carolina Gamecocks tied as the favorites, but neither made his cut. As a result, Tennessee football is very much in play, and given his list, he truly could land anywhere.
