As the men’s and women’s basketball teams awaited their NCAA Tournament seedings, Tennessee football was preparing for spring ball and still focused on the recruiting trail. The Vols are still trying to secure their first commitment for 2022.

Josh Heupel got one step closer to that with an offensive lineman from just outside Atlanta. Grayson Mains, a three-star offensive tackle across the board who stands at 6’5″ 265 pounds, announced that UT was in his top three.

Joining Tennessee football on Mains’ list were the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Michigan State Spartans. The product of Lambert High School in Suwanee, Ga. announced the schools Sunday afternoon on Twitter.

Obviously, at 265 pounds, the Vols will need Mains to put on weight if he’s going to be able to play offensive tackle in the SEC. Even with the transition to Heupel’s system, that’s far too small to compete on the line of scrimmage in that league. However, there is still plenty of time for Mains to get stronger, so this isn’t a worry yet.

It’s also clear that the Vols’ staff, particularly offensive line coach Glen Elarbee, is making an impact on him. Elarbee offered him, according to Ryan Callahan of GoVols247, back in January when they were all with the UCF Knights. UCF was then the favorite on the Rivals Fan Future Cast to land him.

Well, UCF has now not even made the cut with Heupel and Elarbee on Rocky Too. Speaking of forecasts, there are no projections on the Rivals Future Cast or the 247Sports Crystal Ball yet, so nothing is official.

Taking all of this into account, Tennessee football has a great chance to land this prospect. Heupel has been focusing on offensive lineman, as junior college transfer Jeremiah Crawford was the one player he signed specifically in the Vols’ 2021 class. Given the recent departures, that’s going to be a focus in the future as well. Mains would be a great start.
