Tennessee football makes cut for 2022 Louisiana DE Quency Wiggins
Given the loss of a key signee and a couple of major transfers, Tennessee football is obviously in the market for a few elite edge rushers. That’s a great place for Josh Heupel to start as he continues to look for his first commitment of 2022, and he recently got one step closer to that on the edge rusher front with a prospect from Louisiana.
The Vols made the top 10 for strongside defensive end Quency Wiggins. A four-star on Rivals and 247Sports Composite and a three-star on 247Sports out of Madison Prep Academy in Baton Rouge, La., Wiggins stands somewhere between 6’6″ and 6’7″ and weights somewhere between 260 and 270 pounds.
In addition to Tennessee football, Wiggins had the LSU Tigers, Ole Miss Rebels, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Baylor Bears, Auburn Tigers, South Carolina Gamecocks, Michigan Wolverines, USC Trojans and Oregon Ducks on his list. He announced them in a video on Twitter Monday afternoon.
Obviously, Wiggins’ size would make him very valuable in any defense. As the Vols switch back to a 4-3 with a heavy focus on the nickel package going forward, speed is going to be more important on the edge at defensive line.
However, height can still be valuable, and Wiggins standing as tall as he stands could make him an elite prospect at the next level. With the release of Dylan Brooks and the transfers of Kivon Bennett and Deandre Johnson from last year’s team, a guy like Wiggins could really help build depth at defensive end for the future.
Luring Wiggins will be tough, though. While there are no predictions on the 247Sports Crystal Ball, LSU is the unanimous favorite on the Rivals Future Cast and the favorite by a plurality on the Rivals Fan Future Cast to land him. Predictions haven’t been substantial yet, though, so Tennessee football still has a shot. They just have to keep targeting him.
