Happy St. Patrick’s Day. We are two days away from the Tennessee Vols men’s basketball team playing its first NCAA Tournament game and four days away from the women’s basketball team doing the same thing. Meanwhile, spring practice is six days away for football.

That leaves plenty to be excited about, but our morning update on Rocky Top on this holiday doesn’t involve any of those sports. No new developments took place on Tuesday related to them. Instead, we have a heavy focus on the diamond, as baseball and softball both had big wins.

Beyond baseball and softball, though, we have a preview of an NCAA Championships event set to begin in another sport, and we’ll close out with scheduling news in a fourth sport. So there’s plenty to cover beyond the three major sports. Let’s start on the diamond.

Baseball Vols top ETSU in extra innings – Wes Rucker, GoVols247

A walk-off home run from Jordan Beck, his second of the day, helped the No. 10 ranked Tennessee Vols baseball team avoid an upset against the ETSU Bucs, beating them 9-6 in 10 innings to improve to 15-3 ahead of their SEC opening series at the Georgia Bulldogs this weekend. Tony Vitello, Beck and pitcher Connor Housle all spoke after the game. Here’s a bit of what Vitello said.

"“I think, overall, they were just excited to get another walk-off win. You see it on our league. The parks are incredible facilities, the fans are incredibly loyal, and obnoxious of you’re on the other team, great if they’re cheering from your team, and it’s hard to finish a team off in the ninth, so you like to see those walk-off wins accumulate.”"

Softball wins both games of midweek doubleheader – Ken Lay, VolsWire.com

After losing two of three in their SEC opening series against the LSU Tigers, the No. 21 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols softball team rebounded with two dominant blowout wins Tuesday over the Bellarmine Knights, 19-0 and 8-0 respectively. They improved to 20-3 in the process ahead of their upcoming weekend series at the Alabama Crimson Tide.

"In the opener, UT pitchers Callie Turner and Anna Hazlewood combined to hurl a no-hitter and the Knights had only one player reach base.…In the second game, Kiki Milloy had a pair of RBI singles and Shipman drove in a pair. Rylie West had a double and knocked in two runs and Madison Webber had an RBI single for Tennessee (20-3)."

Women’s swimming and diving begins NCAA Championships – NCAA.com

With 16 swimmers and one diver, the Tennessee Lady Vols are set to begin the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in North Carolina. UT’s 17 qualifiers ranks second in the nation on the year, and 16 swimmers is a program best.

"The 2021 DI women’s swimming and diving championships take place from March 17-20 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C. You can view all the qualifiers here."

Outdoor track and field schedule set – UTSports

The cross country and indoor track and field championships are in the books, and now the Tennessee Vols outdoor track and field season is set to begin. Program director Beth Alford-Sullivan announced the schedule for the year on Tuesday.

"The slate features eight regular-season meets before postseason competition begins in mid-May with the SEC Outdoor Championships. The Big Orange will host a pair of meets at Tom Black Track this spring. The 53rd Tennessee Relays are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, April 8-10, while the Tennessee Challenge is slated to take place Saturday, May 1."
