Tennessee football: Five spring practice 2021 storylines
2. Who has the advantage in the quarterback battle?
Jarrett Guarantano and J.T. Shrout may have transferred, and Josh Heupel is still searching for his first quarterback commitment. However, Jeremy Pruitt and the previous coaching staff did leave some talent at this position, giving Heupel plenty to work with as he installs his new system.
The Vols still have Harrison Bailey, a five-star commitment in 2020 who started two games last year, and Brian Maurer, a three-star commitment in 2019 who started four game that year. Pruitt also secured a commitment from Kaidon Salter, an elite prospect out of Texas. Finally, Virginia Tech Hokies graduate transfer Hendon Hooker joined the program.
Maurer, Hooker and Salter are all dual-threats, and Bailey is a drop-back passer. Hooker has the most experience of the four, but Salter and Bailey both have the most potential. Who will Heupel go with? Well, spring practice will be key, as all four guys will be there to compete.
Given Heupel’s system and what he is trying to build, Salter would seem to be the favorite. As a true freshman, he is young and could grow with Heupel, but as a dual threat, he also allow Heupel to implement his schemes to the fullest. Tennessee football hasn’t had a quarterback battle in the offseason since Pruitt took over in 2018, though, so this will be interesting.
