Coming off a dominant second half in an 87-62 blowout win over the No. 14 seed MTSU Blue Raiders in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Tennessee Lady Vols will be looking to reach their first Sweet 16 since 2016 in five years Tuesday. To do that, they have to get past the Michigan Wolverines.

Michigan comes into this game as a No. 6 seed, ranked No. 16 in the AP Poll and No. 14 in the Coaches Poll and having just blown out the No. 11 seed Florida Gulf Coast Eagles 87-66 in the first round. Kellie Harper’s team is the No. 3 seed, ranked No. 13 in the AP Poll and No. 15 in the Coaches Poll.

This is the first meeting in history between these two schools. They face off at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. UT played its first March Madness game at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas, and Michigan played its first tourney game at the UTSA Convocation Center in San Antonio. Led by ninth-year head coach Kim Barnes Arico, this is just the sixth time in history Michigan has made the second round of the Big Dance. However, not counting last year, when the postseason was canceled, its their third straight year in the second round. They are looking for their first ever Sweet 16 appearance.

The return of four starters from last year’s 21-11 team plus the addition of Nebraska Cornhuskers transfer Leigha Brown has made this the best Michigan team arguably in history already. Brown is averaging 17.6 points a game, and Naz Hillmon is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 24.6 points and 11.5 rebounds a game.

Simply put, this team is dangerous. However, starter Amy Dilk, who leads the team in assists, did not travel with the team or play in Sunday’s game due to a medical reason. If she’s out in this game, it could really hamper Michigan’s chances.

Should the Tennessee Lady Vols finally end their drought and get back to the Sweet 16, they will face the winner between the No. 2 seed Baylor Bears and the No. 7 seed Virginia Tech Hokies at some point next weekend. That NCAA Tournament second round game is tonight as well.
