Tennessee football: Ranking all six QBs at start of 2021 spring practice

Of the four scholarship quarterbacks on here, Brian Maurer is the only one who didn’t have any four-star rating as a recruit back in 2019. However, the product of West Port High School in Florida started for Tennessee football before anybody else, as he started four games for the Vols during his true freshman season despite only finishing one of them.
In his career, Maurer is 37-of-81 for 550 yards, two touchdowns and five interceptions, and he also has 28 carries for 97 yards and another two touchdowns. Although those stats are very mediocre, he is a dual-threat quarterback who has tons of zip on the ball, making him a much better fit for Josh Heupel’s system than Jim Chaney’s system.
At the same time, Maurer still has an experience advantage even if he is changing systems with anybody else. Remember, he has still had to go up against similar defenders longer in practice, and that will help his performance in practice.
Taking all this into account, Maurer has as good a chance to earn the starting job as anybody else on the roster. He may be out of rhythm after throwing only six passes last year, but his profile suggests he could run an up-tempo offense.
