Pick Analysis. Josh Dobbs. 5. Scouting Report. Quarterback. 2017 Round 4 No. 135. player. 55

Draft Grade: B

One of two Vols taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2017 NFL Draft, Josh Dobbs was one of the only reasons Tennessee football had successful seasons at all in the 2010s. The quarterback from Alpharetta, Ga. threw over 7,000 yards and 53 touchdowns through four seasons in Knoxville.

Dobbs was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers with hopes that he’d develop behind starter Ben Roethlisberger and assume the role upon his retirement. But things don’t always go as planned, and while Dobbs showed promise in the 2017 preseason, the Steelers drafted QB Mason Rudolph the following year. And yes, starter Ben Roethlisberger is still in black and gold.

In five appearances in 2018, Dobbs completed six passes for 43 yards and an interception. In 2019, the Steelers traded their third-string signal-caller to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a fifth-round pick. The Jaguars then waived Dobbs before the 2020 season, and the Steelers picked him up the next day.

Just days ago, Dobbs signed a new one-year contract with the same Steelers organization that drafted him in 2017. The importance of the quarterback position and the Steelers’ interest in bringing Dobbs back to the Steel City makes his fourth-round selection a good pick in the long run.
