Very little was celebrated on the defensive side of the ball in Tennessee football’s spring game. As we mentioned in the opening slide, there were a couple of three-and-outs, but for the most part, both the Orange and the White units were dominated by the offense. It created a level of concern that we’ll dive into later in the week.

One exception, though, to be fair, was Warren Burrell, who actually made the key play to put the Orange ahead for good. Up 21-17, the White put Hendon Hooker in the game to move the ball. Burrell intercepted one of Hooker’s passes and ran it back 34 yards for a touchdown.

That play built a 28-17 lead for the Orange, and it allowed them to hold on until the end, as the two sides traded touchdowns the rest of the way. Because of that play, Burrell definitely turned heads, and he is in serious competition for one of the starting cornerback jobs.

Now, this was more concerning for Hooker, who is trying to prove himself in the quarterback race, than it was encouraging for Burrell. Hooker did have a touchdown pass late in the game and also ran for another, but he was the only quarterback with a turnover. Burrell being the guy to create that puts him on this list.
