Number of NFL Draft picks: 2
- Round 1: Todd Kelly – San Francisco 49ers (Pick 27)
- Round 8: Dave Thomas – Dallas Cowboys (Pick 203)
*Note: Phillip Fulmer coached the first three games and final game of 1992
Technically, Johnny Majors should be below Jim McDonald. He’s similar to Phillip Fulmer in that after years of producing tons of top-notch NFL talent, his final year was very thin. Only linebacker Todd Kelly and defensive back Dave Thomas were taken in the NFL Draft.
Having a player taken in the first round, like Phillip Fulmer, while also having an extra player taken would put him above Fulmer slightly. However, why did we put him ahead of McDonald? Well, it has something to do with what should count as Majors’ last draft class.
Since Fulmer coached Tennessee football through some of its most important games in 1992, they could almost split this draft class, and then Majors could rely on his 1992 draft class. That one was loaded with nine picks, including two first-rounders in Dale Carter and Chris Mims.
The other picks from that 1992 class wereCarl Pickens, Chuck Smith, Jeremy Lincoln, Tom Myslinski, Shazzon Bradley, Bernard Dafney and Darryl Hardy. Honestly, that draft class would top this list. However, we can only give Majors a slight bonus for that to move him up.
