Tennessee Vols morning report: Rennia Davis wins statewide award

Cinco de Mayo is in the books, but spring sports continue for the Tennessee Vols. Meanwhile, football continues to make big news, as they added another key transfer Wednesday in Mississippi State Bulldogs wide receiver JaVonta Payton.

Our morning update on Rocky Top, though, begins with a look back on the women’s basketball season and the performance of one star. She earned more recognition Wednesday for her success on the court this past year, and she deserves to be mentioned for it.

Beyond that, though, we are focusing everything on previews and recaps. We will recap a softball event, preview a postseason event in men’s golf and bring you an interview that is previewing a baseball event. Let’s start with the women’s basketball news, though.

Rennia Davis TSWA Player of the YearTSWA Online

Having just completed her senior season on Rocky Top, Tennessee Lady Vols basketball forward was named the statewide player of the year by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association. She was recently selected ninth in the WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx.

"Davis averaged 17.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game this season, leading the Lady Vols in both categories. The Jacksonville, Fla., native shot 48 percent from the field and 85.3 percent at the foul line, recording 10 double-doubles in 24 contests."

Tony Vitello previews Missouri series – Wes Rucker, GoVols247

On Friday, the Tennessee Vols baseball team will travel on the road to face the Missouri Tigers for a three-game weekend series. Head coach Tony Vitello spoke with the media Wednesday looking ahead to that series.

"Tennessee and Mizzou are scheduled to play at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on Friday, 4 p.m. Eastern on Saturday and 2 p.m. Eastern on Sunday. The Saturday game will be broadcast on SEC Network, and the Friday and Sunday games will be available to stream on SEC Network+ via the ESPN app."

Softball loses both games to Mississippi State – UTSports

In a doubleheader Wednesday to make up for a three-game series that was canceled in April, the Tennessee Lady Vols softball team lost both games to the Mississippi State Bulldogs. It was the first SEC series loss for UT since losing two of three to the Alabama Crimson Tide back in March.

"The No. 15 Tennessee softball team dropped its doubleheader at Mississippi State Wednesday, falling in game one, 2-1, and in game two, 6-2, at Nusz Park.Tennessee (38-10, 11-9 SEC) played the midweek conference doubleheader as a result of a COVID-19 pause earlier this season."

Men’s golf earns 3-seed in NCAA regionals – NCAA.com

The Tennessee Vols men’s golf team will compete in Noblesville, Ind. for the NCAA Regionals. They earned a No. 3 seed, while the North Carolina Tar Heels and Texas Longhorns were the No. 2 and No. 1 seeds respectively.

"Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted May 17-19. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals."
