Tennessee football: Ranking. previous eight WRs picked first in Vols draft classes
Round 1; Pick 21
There was so much talent on that legendary 1985 SEC Championship Tennessee football team, but the Vols’ go-to receiver, Tim McGee, was the guy who became the top pick from the team in the 1986 NFL Draft. McGee worked his way up, logging no stats in 1982 and catching just 19 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns while averaging nine yards on 12 punt returns in 1983.
Then he emerged as the No. 1 guy with Tony Robinson at quarterback in 1984. Over the next two years, mostly with Robinson but also with Daryl Dickey, he caught 104 passes for 1,756 yards and 13 touchdowns, earning All-American honors in 1985.
This was what led to McGee going so high in 1986, and to be fair, his career worked out in the process. The guy enjoyed nine years in the pros, all of which were with Cincy except a quick departure in 1993, when he spent one year with the Washington Football Team.
Over that period, McGee caught 321 passes for 5,203 yards and 28 touchdowns. He also had over 1,000 kick return yards as a rookie on 43 returns, and in 1989, he had his best year, logging 65 catches for 1,211 yards and eight touchdowns. He retired after the 1994 season.
