Tennessee Vols morning report: Football opener moved up

As the Tennessee Vols football team once again lost Shawn Shamburger to the transfer portal Tuesday while having defensive back Brandon Davis recommit after entering the portal last year, a scheduling change gives them a huge opportunity. Josh Heupel now has a chance to make a major first impression to kick off the season.

Our morning update on Rocky Top leads with that scheduling update. We also have an interview with Heupel to discuss, which includes talking about the schedule as well as other things. Yes, in the heart of May, football is still king and dominating the headlines.

Beyond football, though, we’ve got a baseball recap to bring you along with a bunch of postseason coverage, including softball postseason awards and a preview of a softball postseason game. Women’s golf postseason play also makes our news. Let’s start things off on the gridiron, though.

Football opener moved to ThursdayBrent Hubbs and Austin Price, VolQuest

The Tennessee Vols football team will now play its first game of the 2021 season against the Bowling Green Falcons on Thursday, Sept. 2. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET on SEC Network.

"The Vols were scheduled to host the Falcons on September 4th but it will now be bumped forward two days to September 2nd as Tennessee opens the season on a Thursday night in Neyland Stadium for just the second time.In 2016, Tennessee hosted Appalachian State and needed overtime to beat the Mountaineers 20-13."

Josh Heupel talks schedule, summer – SportsTalk, 99.1 The Sports Animal

Following the news of the schedule change, Tennessee football head coach Josh Heupel went on WNML-FM in Knoxville to discuss the state of the program. Here’s a bit of what he said about moving up the opener.

"“It’s going to be great for our fan base to be able to watch us. I think we’re the only SEC team playing that night. It’s just a great opportunity to welcome our fans back into Neyland and an opportunity for us to showcase who we are moving forward as a football program.”"

Baseball holds off Tennessee Tech – Wes Rucker, GoVols247

Coming off a sweep over the Missouri Tigers, the Tennessee Vols baseball team had to hold off the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 10-8 in a midweek matchup Tuesday. UT jumped out to a 9-0 lead before the bullpen nearly blew it. They moved to 38-11 on the year with the win.

"Tennessee’s attention can now fully turn to this weekend’s huge three-game series against top-ranked Arkansas. The SEC East-leading Vols and SEC West-leading Razorbacks will play at 6:30 p.m. Eastern on Friday, Noon Eastern on Saturday and 1 p.m. Eastern on Sunday."

Softball to begin SEC Tournament – WBIR

Wednesday marks the start of the SEC Tournament for the Tennessee Lady Vols softball team. As the No. 7 seed with a 39-12 record and 12-11 overall league record, UT will face the No. 10 seed Texas A&M Aggies in Tuscaloosa, Ala. That game will be scheduled for 35 minutes after the second game, which is set for 35 minutes after the first game, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET.

"Tennessee and Texas A&M played each other once this season in the Reveille Classic in March, the Lady Vols won that game 3-2. The Aggies finished the season with a 31-20 record, 8-16 in conference play. Texas A&M was swept in its final two series of the season against 6-seed Kentucky and 1-seed Florida."

Four Lady Vols earn five softball SEC honors – SECSports

Outfielder Kiki Milloy and pitcher Ashley Rogers both earned First Team on the All-SEC softball team for 2021. They weren’t the only Tennessee Lady Vols to be recognized either. Infielder Ashley Morgan earned Second Team, Milloy also made it on the All-SEC Newcomer team, and outfielder Cailin Hannon earned SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

"The All-SEC Teams consist of 28 total student-athletes, along with a 14-member All-Newcomer Team, a 12-member All-Freshman team and a 11-member All-Defensive Team. No ties were broken."

Women’s golf enters final day of NCAA Regionals in 13th place – UTSports

After the second day of the NCAA Regionals, the Tennessee Lady Vols golf team was eight strokes off the cut line for sixth place to advance. They currently stand at 17-over par with the final round set to take place Wednesday.

"Micheala Williams-Luck shot even-par (72) on Tuesday and is in 20th place heading into day three. Her score marks the fourth time in the past five rounds that the graduate student has registered par or better. She had three consecutive under-par rounds at the SEC Championship."
