Yes, two former walk-ons have made this list of winners from Tennessee football’s spring practice. There’s no doubt that with the transfers of Wanya Morris and Jahmir Johnson to the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas A&M Aggies respectively, the Vols need help at offensive tackle, and with the losses of Trey Smith and Brandon Kennedy, they need help on the line in general.
The product of Sullivan East High School in Sullivan County, one of the most northeastern parts of the state, helped to step in and fill that void in the spring. Matthew Ray of SI.com noted that he was working with the ones in an open practice, and he saw a lot of action, while protecting the quarterbacks well, in the spring game itself.
In an April article by Mike Wilson of the Knoxville News Sentinel, Cade Mays and offensive line coach Glen Elarbee both touted Davis’ play as a standout blocker. What apparently stood out about him was understanding where he is good and also taking initiative to learn the offense as best as he can.
Davis’ emergence at tackle with Darnell Wright still on the team would allow the Vols more options for Mays, who is clearly their best lineman. He could play tackle, but he’d be best on the inside, so if Davis truly does develop, it will do wonders for Josh Heupel’s offense.
