Running back is a position of excitement for Tennessee football this year, as there is a lot of unknown talent that makes the future there bright despite the transfers of Ty Chandler and Eric Gray. Josh Heupel is working to keep that revolving door of potential going as well on the recruiting trail for UT, and it seems to be working.

Rocky Top made the top 10 for all-purpose back Trevor Etienne out of Louisiana. A four-star on Rivals, 247Sports Composite and ESPN and a three-star on ESPN, Etienne is the younger brother of Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Travis Etienne, who just spent the past four years with the Clemson Tigers.

Clemson joins Tennessee football on Etienne’s list. Other programs include the LSU Tigers, Texas A&M Aggies, Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs, Auburn Tigers, Florida State Seminoles, Florida Gators and Penn State Nittany Lions. He announced the schools Sunday on Twitter.

Coming out of Jennings High School in Jennings, La., Etienne stands in the 5’9″ to 5’10” range and weighs in the 200 to 210-pound range. That’s already a pretty good size for a guy listed as an all-purpose back, so if he has the speed to match it

With no running backs committed in the Vols’ 2022 class, Etienne would be a great pickup. Tiyon Evans, Jaylen Wright, Jabari Small, Tee Hodge, Len’Neth Whitehead and Dee Beckwith make for a solid stable of backs going forward, but Evans is generating the most hype of the group, and he’s a junior college transfer.

Taking that into account and the fact that none of these backs are proven feature backs at the Power Five level, any help in Heupel’s system there will be a big deal. That’s especially true given the fact that Heupel relies on a multi-back set and a strong running game to make his offense go.

Currently, there are no 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions for Etienne, but the Rivals Future Cast has Georgia and Clemson tied for the favorite. The Rivals Fan Future Cast has Clemson as the favorite by a majority. However, Tennessee football being in the running means something, so the Vols shouldn’t give up on him. He’d be a valuable addition to the 2022 class.
