Ranking Tennessee baseball’s five College World Series teams of all time
50-18; SEC East champion; CWS 7th place
Yes, we’re sticking with Tennessee baseball teams that didn’t win any College World Series games. In this case, though, the Vols made it to the SEC Tournament Championship game and finished SEC East Champions. They also received the No. 3 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, and it could have been as high as No. 2 but wouldn’t have gone below No. 4.
Taking those things into account, this most recent Vols team led by Tony Vitello that everybody fell in love with did more than enough to be ahead of the 2005 CWS team. Like that team, they also hosted a regional and went undefeated en route to the CWS.
Once they reached the CWS, the Vols were actually the second-highest team there since the Arkansas Razorbacks were upset in the Super Regionals. However, that’s when it all fell apart. UT was shut out by the Virginia Cavaliers, a team without a national ranking, and then they lost 8-4 to the one team seeded higher than them, the Texas Longhorns.
Unlike the 2005 team, this wasn’t one that was super young, but given that Vitello is early into his career, it didn’t receive any backlash for going home early. Still, those two losses keeps the 2021 team down here in the bottom half of this list.
