Tennessee football: Ranking all nine transfer portal additions by potential impact
Previous school: Michigan Wolverines
Josh Heupel added two key players from Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan Wolverines who are both going to positions that are wide open right now. William Mohan was a surprise addition for Tennessee football after spring practice, but given how depleted the Vols are at linebacker, he was a welcome addition for the program.
At 6’1″ 210 pounds, Mohan only played in one game last year before redshirting. His frame makes him more likely to play inside linebacker, but his versatility allows him to line up at any of the linebacker positions. That makes him very valuable.
On top of that, Tim Banks’ nickel-heavy 4-3 defense, assuming he sticks with the 4-3 base while being multiple, should allow for Mohan to thrive, as his smaller frame will make him better in coverage. That versatility combined with his position put him up here.
However, Mohan still has some competition to play. Because Banks will likely play more 4-2-5 this year, there are fewer linebacker spots, and despite the issues there, Mohan is behind some other guys. After all, there are some players returning, an elite recruit added and another elite player added in the portal, who we’ll get to soon. That could make starting difficult for Mohan.
