It’s somewhat difficult to call Warren Burrell a potential breakout star given the fact that he has started eight games over the past two years. However, four of those starts were due to a Bryce Thompson suspension to open 2019, when Burrell was a true freshman, and he wasn’t ready to shoulder the responsibilities.

Last year, Burrell’s four starts were more split time with Alontae Taylor and Kenney Solomon. During this time, he has come away with only one pass deflection and 30 total tackles, 21 of which were solo. The production has been limited.

As a result, the graduate of North Gwinnett High School in Georgia needs to emerge this year. With Thompson gone, Tennessee football needs help at cornerback. Josh Heupel brought in depth, and Taylor should be fully healthy, but Burrell is the guy who should burst onto the scene. He’s the one with by far the most potential at the position.

If Burrell doesn’t win a starting job at cornerback, he’ll at least alternate time with another player and see more significant action than last year, and he could also potentially win the nickel spot. Simply put, he’s in position to become an elite player this year, and he should make the most of it.
