Pick Analysis. South Carolina Gamecocks. Shane Beamer. 850. 11. player. Scouting Report. 1st season

Overall record: 0-0

Not having any experience as a head coach will obviously have you low on a list of any coaching rankings. However, in Shane Beamer’s case, his background pushes him further down because of just how limited his experience has been. Beamer, the son of Virginia Tech Hokies legendary coach Frank Beamer, has never even been an offensive or defensive coordinator.

Now, that’s not a guarantee that he’ll be a failure. He takes over the South Carolina Gamecocks 13 years after their in-state rival, the Clemson Tigers, promoted Dabo Swinney to head coach despite Swinney having no experience as a coordinator. Successful coaches come in all forms.

However, until Beamer wins or proves anything, he can’t get Swinney level recognition. Over the past three years, Beamer has been the assistant coach and tight ends coach with the Oklahoma Sooners. He has also been an assistant with the Georgia Bulldogs, Mississippi State Bulldogs and USC under Steve Spurrier. In the early 2000s, he was a Tennessee football graduate assistant.

That means Beamer has worked under his father, Steve Spurrier, Kirby Smart, Phillip Fulmer, Lincoln Riley and Sylvester Croom. His references at least run deep. Whether or not that translates to the field, though, is up in the air.
