Tennessee football: Ranking head coaches of Vols’ 2021 opponents
Overall record: 50-54
- Cumberland Bulldogs: 2006 to 2012 (41-33)
- Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 2018 to present (9-21)
Despite 10 years of experience and even a conference championship in 2008, Dewayne Alexander’s struggles with where he’s at now and the low level of where he had success keep him down here. Alexander has only had one .500 season with the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, going 6-6 in 2019. He went 2-5 last year and 1-10 his first year.
Sure, he saw success with the Cumberland Bulldogs. However, that was at the NAIA level. Winning the Mid-South Conference with a 6-5 record in 2008 and three straight NAIA top 25 finishes from 2010 to 2012 is not much to brag about.
With his struggles at the FCS level to this point, it’s hard to believe he’ll provide any serious competition for Tennessee football schematically. Even with that Cumberland success, he still has a losing record for his career, and that’s before we put all the other factors in there.
Simply put, Alexander hasn’t proven anything yet to even be above some of the coaches without head coaching experience. He’s done just enough to be ahead of Scot Loeffler, but that’s not saying a whole lot at this point. UT shouldn’t struggle with TTU regardless of who the head coach of the program is anyway.
