Tennessee football: Ranking head coaches of Vols’ 2021 opponents
Overall record: 0-0
We’re back to coaches with no head coaching experience. Kane Wommack may have never held that title, but he has held the title of coordinator, something that puts him above Shane Beamer. Combine that with no track record of failing yet, and he also belongs ahead of Dewayne Alexander and Scot Loeffler at the moment.
The South Alabama Jaguars are still looking for their first winning season in FBS play since joining in 2012. Steve Campbell wasn’t able to get it done, stumbling to a 9-26 record over the past three years. Wommack, who is only 34, brings a lot of youthful energy into the program.
Over the past two years, Wommack has been defensive coordinator of the Indiana Hoosiers. He was there when Tennessee football had that Gator Bowl comeback win against Indiana to end the 2019 season. However, outside of that, Wommack’s promotion to that role has been the spark Tom Allen’s program needed.
After back to back 5-7 seasons, Wommack helped Allen oversee an 8-5 season and then a 6-2 season. They went from allowing 29.9 points a game to 24.4 in 2019 and just over 20 in 2020. As a result, Wommack has experience with success at a high level as an assistant. He’s still not proven enough to be higher on this list, though.
