Tennessee football: SEC and top 25 picks and gambling bets for Week 1 of 2021
No. 19 Penn State Nittany Lions at No. 12 Wisconsin Badgers (FOX)
Saturday, Sept. 4 at Noon ET; Camp Randall Stadium; Madison, Wis.
Line: Wisconsin -5.5; Over/Under: 50
Moneyline: Wisconsin -225; Penn State +180
Talk about an epic early season matchup. The Penn State Nittany Lions have made headlines all offseason by putting together a top five recruiting class for 2022. James Franklin truly has put together an elite program, and he’s got a program-defining game to open the season to prove it.
Lining up on the other side is a Wisconsin Badgers team that returns a loaded defense and its quarterback. If Paul Chryst can keep the running game going the way a traditional Wisconsin running game goes, this could be the best team he’s ever had, and he’s got a great first test.
This may be an interdivisional matchup, but it’s got key Big Ten Championship implications. Both Wisconsin and Penn State are trying to win their divisions this year, with Wisconsin in fact being a favorite. Neither team wants an early conference loss in that quest.
Prediction
There’s reason to believe this is Wisconsin’s dream season. When the running game is their biggest question, you know they’ll be fine. The oddsmakers agree and have Wisconsin as a five and a half point favorite. We also agree. Wisconsin will cover. Not only will that happen, but the defense will shut down PSU, so take the under as well.
