Tennessee Vols morning report: 2021 football opener is here
It’s back! College football has finally returned, and it’s also returned to normalcy, with no COVID-altered schedules and no delays until the end of September before the season starts. The Tennessee Vols get to kick off things earlier than the rest of the SEC, and in the process, they begin the Josh Heupel era.
Our morning update on Rocky Top leads with continued coverage of the opener and Heupel specifically. He once again had a media session Wednesday, and we’ll discuss some of the things he talked about there.
Football isn’t the only sport with an event today, though. We’ve also got a soccer game happening tonight, and we’ll bring you the details on that as well. Finally, news surrounding what’s on the men’s tennis agenda for the fall also came out Wednesday, so we have plenty to bring you fall sports wise. Let’s start with the main one, football.
Josh Heupel speaks at SEC Coaches Teleconference – Grant Ramey, GoVols247
Yes, the SEC Coaches Teleconference is back, and Tennessee Vols football head coach Josh Heupel was able to take part in it for the first time Wednesday. Heupel previewed UT’s season-opener against the Bowling Green Falcons, which will take place Thursday night at 8 p.m. ET in Knoxville, Tenn. at Neyland Stadium. Here’s a bit of what the first-year head coach said.
"“I know our guys are excited to see our fans at the Vols Walk, run out through the ‘T,’ make a right-hand turn and listen to Rocky Top and go compete our butts off. Really excited about what we’ve done, excited about tomorrow night.”"
Soccer to face USF – Andrew Peters, UT Daily Beacon
With a 4-0 record on the year and no goals surrendered yet, the No. 22 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols soccer team will face its first ranked foe of 2021. UT will visit Tampa, Fla. to take on the South Florida Bulls, ranked, No. 23 in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer. USF enters the game with a 3-1 record. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET.
"South Florida has had a strong season and has seen a lot of competition, including three SEC teams. The Bulls defeated Kentucky and Florida, but lost to LSU."
Men’s tennis fall schedule announced – UTSports
On the heels of an SEC Championship and a Final Four appearance this past, spring, the Tennessee Vols men’s tennis program will be back in action in less than two weeks. Head coach Chris Woodruff announced their schedule for the fall portion of the 2021-2022 season Wednesday.
"Tennessee opens the fall slate at home, serving host to the Knoxville Showdown, set to run Sept. 10-12.A trio of USTA tournaments—the Champaign Future (Sept. 11-18), Fayetteville Future (Sept. 18-25) and Lubbock Future (Sept. 25-Oct. 2)—sandwich the ITA Regionals (Sept. 23-27), which will be held in Knoxville."
