Another team that made its debut under a new head coach last week, just like Tennessee football and the Auburn Tigers, the South Carolina Gamecocks pitched a 46-0 shutout over the Eastern Illinois Panthers. Now, they get a bit tougher of a test, facing an American Athletic Conference team on the road.

The East Carolina Pirates come into this game off of a 33-19 loss to the Appalachian State Mountaineers. After going 4-8 in 2019 and 3-6 last year, Mike Houston is trying to get the program on the right track his third season. Beating USC would be a great way to do that.

With the Georgia Bulldogs next week, USC could be caught in a trap game. On the other hand, they can’t take potential wins for granted, so this game is more important. ECU will likely enter the game upset about being left out of Big 12 expansion talk, but they have to tune that out.

Prediction

Honestly, this seems like one of those highly possible Group of Five upsets over SEC teams. However, there’s no reason to believe in ECU under Houston yet. Shane Beamer still has South Carolina’s defense in a good position, so take the Gamecocks to win and cover here while the game hits the under.

South Carolina: 27 East Carolina: 20 (South Carolina -2; Under 56.5)
