Tennessee football falls slightly in Week 2 SEC Power Rankings
Last week: Defeated Alabama State Hornets 62-0
Opposite the South Carolina Gamecocks, the Auburn Tigers are down on this list solely due to tier of opponent. As was already mentioned, things are fleshed out more after two weeks, and the drop for Bryan Harsin’s program isn’t due to anything they did. It’s due to everything other teams that hadn’t proven themselves did.
Auburn has looked dominant on both sides of the ball through two weeks. However, their wins were against the Akron Zips and Alabama State Hornets, a MAC team and an FCS team respectively. That’s hardly proving anything.
Style points do put this team about USC, but as we’ve already mentioned that takes a backseat to the tier of the opponent until the value of the programs everybody is facing fleshes itself out a bit more. At the same time, though, winning 60-10 and 62-0 are nothing to sneeze at.
We’ll find out how legitimate Auburn is this week when it hits the road to face a red-hot Penn State Nittany Lions team. If the Tigers can just be competitive, they’ll move up this list again. For now, though, they belong down here. Still, they are looking better than any other team with a first-year head coach, and that’s saying something.
