Tennessee football: Five Vols to watch for vs. TTU

Coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Pittsburgh Panthers, Tennessee football has to regroup. The Vols have what should be an easy victory this week with the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles coming to town. After all, TTU isn’t just an FCS school. The program, still looking for a winning record in its fourth season under Dewayne Alexander, is bad by FCS standards.

TTU comes in with an 0-2 record, having gotten blown out by the Samford Bulldogs and Furman Paladins. UT should be able to sleepwalk to a win no matter how bad they play. However, a couple of players will be key to making sure that happen and keeping this from being a game.

As a we get set to break down the Vols to watch out for in this matchup, the players crucial to winning and building a huge lead aren’t the only ones on this list. We’ll also look at players who have a chance to showcase a bit of their abilities. Let’s break down which of those guys has the chance to stand out Saturday. These will be the five key Vols when Tennessee football faces TTU.

Running back. Sophomore. Jabari Small. 5. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. player. 839

5’11” 206 pounds; Hometown: Memphis, Tenn.

In the opener against the Bowling Green Falcons, Jabari Small and Tiyon Evans both went for over 100 yards on the ground. Last week, however, Evans was out, and Small only managed 18 yards on eight carries with Jaylen Wright as the other main starter. He did have a touchdown, to be fair, along with one catch for six yards.

However, more was expected out of Small overall, and it didn’t come. Given the questions about Evans and the nature of their opponent, it’s likely Small doesn’t see a lot of action this week. Also, if there’s one thing TTU is decent at, it’s stopping the run. Both their foes’ main running backs failed to hit 100 yards or average five yards a carry.

Okay, so Small should still dominate. If he does, Tennessee football can have this game in hand early on and begin focusing on the Florida Gators. Josh Heupel could also begin to work with some of the other running backs. A big, early performance by Small will be key to that.
