Tennessee football: Five Vols to watch for vs. TTU
6’2″ 240 pounds; Hometown: Nashville, Tenn.
Both Princeton Fant and Jacob Warren showed last week how Tennessee football tight ends can thrive in Josh Heupel’s system. Warren was the star with five catches for 55 yards and a touchdown, and he would have had more if Joe Milton III had not missed him in the first quarter.
Taking that into account, we easily could have put Warren on this list. However, Warren’s success was largely due to the way Heupel snuck him out of the backfield to make big plays. He’s clearly the No. 2 tight end on the roster, even if he’s the current leader in receiving among tight ends this year with six catches for 59 yards.
Princeton Fant is still the main guy at this position. Last week, he had four catches for 47 yards, so he still did his part. Also, he had one catch for six yards against BGSU. Going forward, he’ll still be the key tight end for the Vols.
In this matchup, tight end will be a huge part of the passing game. TTU allowed Ryan Miller to catch three passes for 42 yards when it went against Furman, and it allowed Michael Vice to catch four passes for 57 yards and a touchdown against Samford. As a result, the Vols have a great opportunity to utilize both tight ends again, but Fant will likely be the most crucial.
