There is a go-to receiver and excitement amidst the quarterback change. However, one player has generated more offense for the Golden Eagles than anybody else, and that player is their running back, David Gist. Tennessee football will have to watch out for him at all times.

Through two games so far, Gist has 26 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown. He is also second on the team in receiving with seven catches for 50 yards. The guy is truly an all-purpose back, and he showed that back in 2019, the only full season in which he was a starter so far.

That year, Gist had 124 carries for 548 yards and a touchdown to go along with 32 catches for 423 yards and three touchdowns. There’s a reason that’s the only season so far under Dewayne Alexander in which TTU didn’t finish under .500. Gist was a huge offensive weapon for them and was able to be explosive at crucial times.

Heck, even last year, TTU went 2-5, but they started the year 1-1, and those were the only two games Gist played in. He had 20 carries for 75 yards and two touchdowns that day while also catching a pass for five yards. Simply put, the team goes as Gist goes and has done that for two years. If he has a big day, he could give the Vols trouble.
