Tennessee football: Week 3 SEC and top 25 picks and bets
No. 22 Auburn Tigers at No. 10 Penn State Nittany Lions (ABC)
Saturday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. ET; Beaver Stadium; University Park, Pa.
Line: Penn State -5; Over/Under: 53
Moneyline: Penn State -195; Auburn +165
While Alabama and Florida is certainly the game of the week, the Auburn Tigers and Penn State Nittany Lions is more intriguing than you might thing. Auburn was supposed to be rebuilding under Bryan Harsin, but he walked into some talent and has put up 60 points his first two weeks.
On the other hand, James Franklin is rolling at Penn State. He may have the best recruiting class in the nation lined up next year, and he already has a huge quality win over the Wisconsin Badgers. If he gets one here, you have to think PSU will hit the top five.
Franklin always seems to be at his best when Tennessee football lures away his defensive coordinator. He won the Big Ten in 2016, the year after Bob Shoop left, and now he’s rolling the year after Tim Banks left.
Prediction
Given the fact that Penn State’s non-top 25 win is a 44-13 thrashing of a Ball State Cardinals team that could win the MAC, this team is just more proven than Auburn. That’ll show up here. The Nittany Lions will win and cover, but they’ll also control the clock, so the game hits the under.
Penn State: 30 Auburn: 21 (Penn State -5; Under 53)
