Tennessee football: Five takeaways from 56-0 win vs. Tennessee Tech
4. Running game is a major concern.
We could chalk this up to Cooper Mays being hurt at center. Jerome Carvin had to mover over to take over that role, which he’s not great at, and he had to leave somebody else to occupy his guard spot, which he is great at. As a result, Mays’ injury basically left Tennessee football down two linemen when you look at the whole situation.
Add in Jabari Small being hurt, and it’s understandable why the run game would struggle…if it were playing a decent team. The Vols were playing Tennessee Tech! They should have had an easy time moving the ball, and they just didn’t.
Tiyon Evans got the start and had 15 carries for 41 yards, averaging a mere 2.7 yards a carry. He got a touchdown, but that’s embarrassing against this defense. Jaylen Wright came in and had 9 carries for 43 yards and a touchdown, averaging just 4.8 yards a carry.
On goal-line and short-yardage plays, the Vols struggled significantly. It took them three plays to score a touchdown in the third from the one-yard line. Sure, the team rushed for just over 200 yards, but that’s due to Hendon Hooker rushing for 64 yards and a touchdown. Overall, this is very disturbing going forward.
