Whenever you face an FCS program, you’re usually going to have lots of people step up. Such was the case for Tennessee football on Saturday as they dominated the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 56-0, rebounding from a heartbreaking loss to the Pittsburgh Panthers a week ago and getting ready for the start of SEC season next week.

It was the perfect time for lots of guys to shine, and there were plenty of feel-good stories in the process. As we get set to hand out our helmet stickers for the top performers, know that it was actually difficult to separate out those who played best. There were just too many to name.

Even with a sluggish start, the Vols had lots of players get the chance to stand out in a big way. However, there were a few standouts among the standouts as this team moved to 2-1 on the season, and we’re going to break them down here. These are Tennessee football’s five best performers in their win over TTU.

We almost had Theo Jackson on here for a third straight week. After all, the senior nickel once again led the team with one and a half tackles for a loss. However, a big credit to the pass rush, which generated six sacks on the day, comes down to what the defensive line was able to do in the middle. Matthew Butler got it started.

Aubrey Solomon was the workhorse up front throughout the day, though. Despite not even being listed in the two-deep rotation at the start of the year, Solomon led the team in tackles and tied for the lead in solo tackles. As a result, he makes this list.

The whole defensive line could have made this list, to be honest. After all, not only did the Vols have six sacks, but they also held TTU’s running backs to just 22 yards on 10 carries. Solomon having the best numbers of that unit was why we put him on here, and he does show how deep Tennessee football can go in the middle right now.
