Tennessee football’s top five performers in 56-0 win vs. Tennessee Tech
17-of-25 for 199 yards, 3 TDs; 9 carries for 64 yards, 1 TD
Joe Milton III was held out of the game due to injury. Harrison Bailey came in late and showed why he’s not starting, as he also overthrew some deep balls but doesn’t have the mobility that Milton or Hendon Hooker have despite running for a first down on a 4th and 7 and then scoring a touchdown on a keeper.
Hooker, despite some mistakes, made a strong case to be the starter. Yes, he had some overthrows too. However, his decision making got much better in this game, particularly knowing when to keep it an run it on an RPO. His one touchdown run was based on such a great decision.
In addition to that touchdown run, Hooker had an impressive 22-yard run in the first half that was almost a score. His touchdown pass to JaVonta Payton to open the game was a beautiful throw and catch. He was clutch on fourth down throughout the day.
Simply put, Hooker was a playmaker for Tennessee football, and you can’t overlook scoring four total touchdowns. Now, he still has a fumbling problem, as he lost one on an impressive run and had two in the backfield, one on a botched handoff. The other was a botched snap, though, so while there are things for him to work on, it wasn’t all his fault, and he was still a great playmaker.
