Offensive grades part II

Wide receivers: B

JaVonta Payton had a great touchdown catch and a 10-yard catch 4th and 4 in the second. Velus Jones Jr. had a 45-yard touchdown catch on 4th and 3. They combined to have six catches for 121 yards. Walker Merrill added 40 yards. The unit was solid, but Payton and Ramel Keyton missed on multiple nice deep balls. That’s enough for this to be just a B. They have to make those plays.

Tight ends: B-

Jacob Warren and Princeton Fant continue to be valuable weapons for Tennessee football, and Warren had another touchdown grab. The two combined to have four catches for 17 yards, but they counted. However, they just get a B- because of their blocking. Tight ends have to run block too, and they failed with the rest of them there. Pass blocking was fine, though.

Offensive line: C-

We broke down just how bad the running game was Saturday already. Add in the fact that the Vols had a bad snap on a key third down play in the second and couldn’t run for a first down, and the run blocking alone is an F. Cooper Mays being hurt at center has been devastating. However, pass blocking was fine, and that got this unit to average.

Overall offensive grade: C+

Honesty, the offense didn’t have to work too hard for points. Four touchdowns came off interceptions, including a pick-six, and one came after a personal foul penalty kept a drive alive. In reality, the offense only legitimately had 21 points, but they did have over 400 yards.
