The last time Tennessee football faced the Florida Gators, it was actually a December showdown, and then head coach Jeremy Pruitt threw a bunch of young guys into the game. As a result, many players in the system, at least the ones who returned, are actually pretty familiar with what Dan Mullen likes to run.

With the Vols set to travel to The Swamp for their SEC opener, Josh Heupel would be wise to turn to some of those players who actually stepped up and performed in that game. Our list acknowledging the Vols who will be key in this game uses that performance as a factor.

Obviously, Florida’s tendencies this year with a new quarterback and coming off a heartbreaking 31-29 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide change things up a bit. However, there are things we can pull from that too along with Rocky Top’s performances, so let’s dive in. These were the five Vols players to watch for when Tennessee football visits Florida Saturday.

Against the Florida Atlantic Owls, Florida allowed tight end John Mitchell to catch four passes for 51 yards. Last week, in their loss to Alabama, the Gators allowed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Jahleel Billingsley. Given how Josh Heupel likes to utilize the tight ends, Jacob Warren could be his secret weapon in this game.

Princeton Fant is the No. 1 tight end and had three catches for 23 yards last year against UF. This year, he’s got six catches for 60 yards. However, with so much focus on him, Warren has actually been the top receiving tight end.

For the year, Warren has nine catches for 69 yards, and he also has two touchdowns. He should have had three, but Joe Milton III missed him in the first half against the Pittsburgh Panthers. Still, Warren or Fant will be key for Tennessee football’s offense on Saturday, and for now, the money should be on Warren to stand out.
