Stock up

Josh Heupel’s willingness to gamble

Our only reservation about this one is if Josh Heupel will keep the same energy he had last weekend in SEC play. However, Heupel the gambler is all about his decisions, not about the quality of the opponent he’s facing, and that’s enough to keep his stock up here. Heupel went for it on five fourth downs in the game, none of which were crucial.

One was a 4th and 7, and many were in the 4th and 3 range near midfield. More importantly, Tennessee football converted on four of them and scored touchdowns on three of those drives. If Heupel keeps that up, the Vols could make things interesting going forward. It’s definitely a value to have such a coach.

Rush defense

Okay, so this one’s a bit tricky. The Vols couldn’t buy a pass rush against Pitt, they allowed the Panthers to clinch the game on the ground against them late, and you can’t gauge what they did against TTU. However, they did hold Pitt to just 96 yards rushing, and none of their running backs averaged four yards a carry or more.

Meanwhile, against the Golden Eagles, they did dominate, coming away with six sacks and not allowing anybody to average more than three yards a carry. The combination of those things is enough for us to say this stock is legitimately up right now.
